Tata Group Profile
Founded by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in 1868 and headquartered in India, the Tata group is a global business conglomerate operating in over 100 countries across 6 continents.
From an early foray into steel and automobiles, to staying abreast of the latest technologies, the Tata group today has a strong presence across diverse industries such as agrochemicals, automotive, chemicals, construction, finance, consumer products, and hospitality.
Tata Sons is the principal investment holding company and promoter of Tata companies.
Tata Steel Downstream Products Limited (TSDPL) was originally set up in 1997 as Tata Ryerson Ltd., a joint venture between Tata Steel of India and Ryerson Inc. of USA. In 2009, Tata Steel acquired the entire equity of Ryerson Inc. and thus was born TSDPL, a 100% subsidiary of Tata Steel.
TSDPL was created to bring Steel Service Centre solutions for the first time to industrial customers and is the first organized Steel Service Centre capable of high tensile steel processing in India.
Such centres, a popular and time-tested concept in industrially developed countries around the world, was hitherto unknown to the value-seeking Indian industrial customers.
Thus, the foundation of a new emerging industry was laid by TSDPL, which continues to follow its avowed mission of building a trusted and irreplaceable bridge between steel producers and steel consumers.
With 10 large processing units, 14 sales and distribution locations and a host of partners like external processing agencies, suppliers and other stakeholders, today TSDPL is India’s largest Steel Service Centre organization.
The Company caters to a broad spectrum of industries and has emerged as one of the leading Automotive Steel Suppliers.
World-class processing facilities and comprehensive quality assurance systems combine to make TSDPL a benchmark in the steel service industry.
Steel Service Centre
What is a Steel Service Centre (SSC)?
A Steel Service Centre (SSC) acts as an intermediary between steel producers and the end users, providing processing, inventory management and distribution services; thereby making it the most vital link in the steel supply chain.
SSC supplies steel in the exact quantity, in the exact form and at the exact time that customers require, often processing or adding value to the material.
How does a Steel Service Centre function?
A Steel Service Centre procures steel products in large quantities from producing mills, holds the material in inventory and either processes it or simply trades it in smaller units, to the customers.
A World Class Plate Processing and Fabrication Centre
As a part of its continuous effort to provide more value added services to its customers, TSDPL has set up a state-of-the-art Plate Processing and Fabrication Centre in Tada (Andhra Pradesh) which is 70 km from Chennai near Sri City. This aims to cater to the specialized demand from various emerging engineering segments of the industry.TSDPL’s Tada plant is poised to grow in various industry segments such as Lifting & Excavation segment, Power Equipment, Wind Energy, Ship Building, Rubber Machinery, Mining Machinery, Material handling equipment, Boiler & Steam generating plant among others.
The Service Centre is equipped to analyse the parts and shapes to be produced with the help of proprietary algorithms and customised software, thus optimizing the raw material usage and maximizing yield. The facility at Tada can burn plates having thickness of 3 mm to 200 mm and width of up to 5000 mm of various specifications, strength and hardness to complex shapes and sizes. The unit can also fabricate ready-to-assemble parts.
The Company’s full-line of Plate processing capabilities include Shot Blasting, Oxy fuel cutting, Plasma cutting along with bevelling, straightening, press brake, drilling, milling, machining, welding, sub assembling and surface protection (primer coat) of plates ranging from ordinary carbon steel, alloy to ultra-high strength, high hardness grades, aluminium and stainless steel.
In design and development, advanced software tools are used to generate 3D product models as per customer requirements. Usage of these advanced software tools help to provide high precision levels, optimization of RM usage and yield maximization.
The service centre is equipped with advanced welding equipment, established welding procedures, certified welders, ‘best in industry’ material handling equipment, quality control systems ensuring zero defect assemblies on time and every time.
Services provided by the unit include capability to source material from domestic and foreign mills, capacity to hold appropriate inventory, capability to produce parts as per exacting standards and specifications, Just-in time (JIT), Just-in Sequence (JIS) supplies, excellent quality systems, trained and skilled manpower and trading of Steel Plates.
These attributes make TSDPL the preferred partner for the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). TSDPL has been recognised previously as the SQEP – Platinum Certified Supplier for Caterpillar. Thus, they can now concentrate on their core activities of machine building and final assembly leaving the component and sub-assemblies to be made by the Service Centre. TSDPL can help the OEMs to achieve overall competitive advantage through effective supply chain management, and delivering superior value proposition.
It is through this plate-processing centre that we serve OEMs such as Caterpillar, Kobelco, Terex, Danieli, Vestas, Wheels India and L&T Ship Building among many others.
Quality Management Systems are established in our operations to integrate our Quality Policy – ‘A total dedication of quality will be a way of life in everything we do. Customers and Steel suppliers are the reason for our business. Our primary goal is to provide service by anticipating and exceeding their expectation.’
